terrere

terrere

The word terror comes from the Latin word terrere, which means to frighten or scare. The concept of terrorism goes back to the 19th century. Terrorism as a political-military strategy has existed for about 40 years

definition:

political violence in an asymmetrical conflict that is designed to induce terror and psychic fear sometimes indiscriminate, through the violent victimization and destruction of noncombatant targets sometimes iconic symbols. Such acts are meant to send a message from an illicit clandestine organization.

Political violence in an asymmetrical conflict that is designed to induce terror and psychic fear sometimes indiscriminate, through the violent victimization and destruction of noncombatant targets sometimes iconic symbols. Such acts are meant to send a message from an illicit clandestine organization. The purpose of terrorism is to exploit the media in order to achieve maximum attainable publicity. Terrorist groups often proclaim themselves to be guerrillas or to have to lead a partisan’s fight with unconventional fighting methods to compensate for their military inferiority

Depending on the country & the political system the types of terrorism are varying:

  • Civil disorder – a form of collective violence interfering with the peace, security, and normal functioning of the community
  • Political terrorism – violent criminal behaviour designed primarily to generate fear in the community for political purposes
  • Limited political terrorism – acts of terrorism which are committed for ideological or political motives
  • Official or state terrorism – terrorist acts carried out by governments in pursuit of political objectives, often as part of their foreign policy
  • Data-terrorism – the unjust storage or use of private information for economic, political or personal gains
  • Passive terrorism – is an inert or quiescent behavior towards terrorism, non-reaction & non-involvement in countering terrorism
